Summer Series Event 3 -Queen Mary
Sat 12 May

The Queen Mary event turned out to be quite extraordinary from a wind point of view. Before Race 1 the wind was building into the mid teens with gusts over the 22 knot mark, consequently most people opted for caution and used a changedown sail - several IMCO 7.4's were in evidence. However hardly had the race started than the wind dropped to something below the 10 knots mark and despite the brooding dark clouds it stayed that way throughout most of the race.
Formula sailors Dan Simpson, Xav Ferlet and Richard Priest nevertheless managed to power their way round the course and filled the first three places overall, with Rob Kent, Rod Davis and Chris Gibson taking the first three raceboard slots.
Just as Race two was about to start Rod Davis lost his rig from his raceboard and was forced to start late. He and James McIntosh (RSX) crossed the line on port and went over to the right hand side of the beat, where fortune favoured them mightily and they made it round the windward mark on the heels of Dan and Xav and well ahead of the rest of the raceboards. James held on and finished in 3rd place but Rod was taken out by an almighty gust at the next to last gybe as the rest of the fleet went by and he ended up a miserable 14th.
The wind continued to howl during lunchtime and by the start of Race 3 the waves were being whipped up so much it was difficult to get off the bank. Several sailors missed the start altogether and drifted around trying to shelter from what felt very like a hailstorm as the wind rose to the mid twenties with gusts of over 30. Xav managed to get one over his erstwhile pupil Dan and James McIntosh scored another excellent 3rd on his RSX. Rob Kent was first raceboard ahead of Chris Gibson and Annette Kent.
The wind started to drop again as Race 4 started and the Race Officer decided to shorten the course after one lap for most of the fleet as it looked very much as we were going into a major lull. Dan Simpson made it to the line ahead of Rob Kent and Chris Gibson, with Andy Lacy collecting his best result of the day in 4th place.
Overall a very mixed day's racing, a triumph for Dan Simpson who showed how much he has benefitted from Xav Ferlet's generous Formula tuition by beating the master for the first time in an event. Mind you, before the event started Xav claimed he had been up until 4am dancing, so maybe he just was plumb salsa'd out! Next time maybe we'll keep Dan out until 4am just to even things up a bit!
Rob Kent was 1st Raceboard, having led the fleet in every race and James McIntosh showed how well the RSX can go when it has enough wind, taking two third places behind the Formulas in the two really windy races of the day. Annette Kent continued her winning ways, leading the 7.5 fleet with a position of 7th overall. Alex Trickle persisted with his RSX and finished in 13th place overall.
