LWA 2011 Melting Pot

15 bold sailors took to the water at Queen Mary last Saturday, and yes it was cold but fortunately the wind veered from North to North-East which took the chill off slightly!

Most of the Raceboard sailors were on Phantoms with Tushingham XR:Race sails, but there was also the odd Demon and Lightning and a couple of Mistral Equipe II and an F2 Race. The superb Junior turnout included Harry Garstka on an 8.5 raceboard, two 7.8 Technos one 5.8 and three 4.5 Technos!

Rob Kent won Race One from James Moon and Alan Jackson in some style in the 8 knots or so of wind, Harry Garstka- first time on a raceboard in his life - almost made it first to the windward mark although sadly he slipped back later! Several of the youngsters however had decided to return to the warmth of the clubhouse, but John Humphries, Aidan Liddy and Galahad Wisbey stayed out for all three races. Alan Jackson’s cams were popping off the mast and despite his third place he also went ashore.

In Race Two a sudden gust hit the start line with about ten seconds to go and pushed James and Annette Kent over the line. By the time they has re-rounded Jon Davis and dad Rod had taken advantage and held on to 2nd and 3rd places behind Rob.

The wind provided a few more exciting gusts in Race Three which was back to form and Rob, James and Annette filled the first three places. Harry Gartska managed to pinch a place from Giles Wooltorton to finish 7th, let’s hope that this season we see Harry and some more youngsters sailing a raceboard and getting properly stuck in! Several LWA members have offered to loan raceboards to youngsters who would like to give them a tryout. If you are interested email us at info@LWAwindsurfing.co.uk and we’ll work something out.

The AGM took place in the afternoon and minutes will be posted shortly.
