A sunny day, some wind and the best Icebreaker turnout for years! Seven teams - a total of 35 sailors - lined up for the first Icebreaker of 2009 at Bewl Valley. Some young new faces, in the shape of the little Kents and Gibsons, and some old faces coming back such as Andy Gibson and others from further afield such as Andy Mexome who helped swell the numbers on the start line, together with a load of Hythe Hot Shots.
Race One began with the now traditional Icebreaker Gate Start, but there were a couple of hot moments as the wind dipped and a Line Start was used for the rest of the day just in case! Rob Kent swung into action and took first place ahead of James Moon and Marc Carney. There was a major upset in Race Two whereby Rob Kent’s head came into violent connection with Chris Gibson’s boom end - bear in mind they were in the same team! This left young Stuart Hards the opportunity to take first place, beating Rob and Chris Gibson to the line.
The wind remained twitchy for the rest of the afternoon, Rob Kent scored a first in Race Three but a 5th in the last race behind race leader James Moon. That was enough to give Rob an overall win by 3 points, James Moon and Marc Carney were 2nd and 3rd on the same points with Chris Gibson in 4th on 12.
Hythe Hot Shots carried off the team event by the slender margin of 5 points ahead of Farmoor Flyers who were only 10 ahead of Silicon Sisters. This should mean a good needle match is in prospect on Farmoor’s home water next Sat, 14 Nov!
