Bough Beech Summer Series Event 1

     The weather was more kind to us than in previous years at Bough Beech, not too cold, some sunshine and not howling winds! We had a turnout of 30 sailors in all, boosted by the very welcome addition of 7 juniors, one of whom, Ryan Tilbury, sailed with the main fleet and 6 more who sailed a one -lap course with  a separate start after the main fleet, something which we have never tried before but it seemed to
work well.
     Graeme Fuller from Surf-Sales kindly brought over three new Exocet longboards to demo, the Warp-X, the Kona and the Mahala. The Warp-X found its way onto the course in the hands of various racers who were all impressed by its performance and the general opinion semed to be that with a bit of tweaking of the daggerboard mechanism and footstrap positions this would be a board they could go for. The Kona and the Mahala tandem were also tried but not in races and they were well received by those sailors who used them. The Kona seemed exceptionally stable to me on the reach when it got up on its “rear step” and it pointed well up wind. So there seems to be an opportunity for new life to be injected into the in the raceboard class thanks to these new developments. Our thanks go to Graeme and his team for bringing the kit.
     It proved to be a great day for the Formula boys in the shape of Keith Atkinson and Dan Simpson, despite there being some large holes in the wind around the windward mark. In Race One Keith blasted off to the front and had no trouble holding off the raceboard opposition but Dan found himself well caught by the raceboards with their capacity to continue to make progress through the lulls. Rob Kent started his season with a bang taking second place followed by Nick Kidd and Adrian Rippington. Annette Kent, sailing her IMCO with a 7.5 had her best result of the day in 7th place.
     Nick Kidd took Race 2 on his 10.25 Reflex followed by Alan Jackson and Andy Lacy. Dan Simpson made 5th and Keith slipped to 12th.
     After lunch it was the turn of the Formulas again as Keith took first place with Dan 2nd, Rob was the first raceboard in 3rd with Alan Jackson in 4th.
     The last race of the day went to Dan, ahead of Keith with Rob once again in 3rd and Nick Kidd in 4th.
     Overall it was a triumph for Keith Atkinson on 4 points, followed by Rob Kent on 7 and Dan Simpson on 8, taking 3rd from Nick Kidd by dint of a 1st place in race 3. Ryan Tilbury was 1st Junior on the main course, a few points ahead of youth Alex Trickle, the only RSX in the fleet.
     In the Junior Fleet the positions were remarkably consistent throughout all their four races, Rupert Munro-Faire taking four 1sts, Sam Conroy four 2nds, Stuart Hards four thirds and Conor Wells four 6ths. The pattern was broken only by Amy Barratt and Andrew Robinson who charted three 4ths and a 5th and three 5ths and a 4th respectively.
