LWA 2011 Summer Series

The forecast for Farmoor Reservoir near Oxford was rather ominous, and it turned out to be the windiest weekend we’ve had for many years at this venue. Most of the time it was blowing over 20mph and at times the gusts were well over 30!

Our one-day LWA event was combined with the UKWA Inlands Series Event 6. Saturday was a grey day, but despite this the entry was 58 sailors overall, which included 22 LWA Raceboard sailors, 1 RS:X, one Formula and two juniors.

The wind began to build gently as we went out for Race One, blowing across the lake from the far left hand corner and anticipating a howler many sailors opted for caution, but in fact Race One was fairly gentle and was won by UKWA Chairman Bob Ingram who had the right sail for the job, he was followed by LWA sailor Rob Kent.  However those who changed back up again for Race Two received a rude awakening as the wind got into its stride and fulfilled the forecast. At the sharp end of the Raceboard Fleet youngsters Matt Brown and Chris Guest (LWA) were slogging it out, ending the day with a couple of wins each. Two races were sailed in the morning and three in the afternoon, and we were tired and hungry when the barbecue appeared! The LWA only sailors however were let off the hook after 4 races and were able to relax as the rest of the fleet went out for Race Five.

Meanwhile the 3.5, 4.5 and 5.8 Fleets were taking part in training organised by Charlie Money and Chloe Bennett and then they raced in the afternoon.

Congratulations to Chris Guest and James Moon, who were 1st and 2nd in the LWA Event and 2^nd and 3^rd Raceboard overall - for showing the old guys how to do it. Having said that, longtime Supervet Bill Keeling punched in a 3rd place in Race Four and brand new Supervet Andy Lacy scored a 4th place in Race One! There’s life in the old dogs yet!  In the Juniors Galahad and Rebecca put up a great performance in the strong winds, with Galahad pinching three wins out of four.
