This was more like a classic Icebreaker, away with the summer wetsuits in most cases, and wind - and plenty of it! And a good turnout - 25 sailors, including a couple of Formulas in the shape of Tim Gibson and local boy Dan Simpson. We lost a couple of the youngsters however to squad training, but those who did make it coped very bravely with the wind which gusted up to 30 from time to time.
As there was plenty of wind we were able to use a Gate Start, traditional in the Icebreaker from the days when we used to get 100 plus boards on the start line. Race One started so promptly that several people missed the start altogether. Dan Simpson on his Formula had things all his own way, but Tim was one of those who missed the start in Race One, and he didn’t really hit his stride until after lunch. In Race One James Moon had a  splendid ride on his 8.5 Lightning to take 2nd place behind Dan, with Andy Gibson taking 3rd in his best race of the day ahead of Jon Davis in 4th. In Race 2 there were a few lulls which caused people to fall in backwards and this changed the finish order, Rob Kent took 2nd place between the two Formula boards and local boy Tom Squires finished 4th on an AHD raceboard, in fact Tom finished in this position in the last two races also. Meanwhile the juniors were sticking with it, Jenna Gibson and Aidan Liddy both on raceboards and the younger ones on Technos, some of them completing a couple of laps, a tremendous achievement in the prevailing conditions.
The wind persisted into the afternoon, as we went out for Race Three the indicator showed 22.7 mph, and before the start it blew up still more! Some of the gusts were so strong that sailors were being flattened on the beat. Dan and Tim brought their Formulas home in places 1 and 2 in both the afternoon races, followed by James Moon, who consolidated his top slot for the day in the Raceboard fleet.
Once again the Silican Sisters team brought home the bacon, which gave them a clear run of three wins in the series to bring them out on top. In the Juniors the Girls Only team, already in the lead after two events, had no competition because of the unavoidable absence of the Boys Only at squad training, so they won the Junior Team Series.
