Yet another windy Brogborough! How does it happen? 18 windsurfers decided to give it a try, The wind was coming over the left hand side of the lake, in great big lumps, gusting well into 25 knots and maybe more, with not a few lulls just to make life more interesting.
At Brog we usually run a gate start and for Race One this worked well for those who got away early on the gust, but not so well for those who hung back, who found themselves at a distinct disadvantage as the wind decided to drop for a few minutes. It soon became apparent that the best way round the course was to reach back from the windward mark almost to the start area and then blast across to the gybe mark, thus avoiding the dirty wind coming off the bank. Those who worked this out earliest got round the course at a fantastic speed, and Jon White, visiting us from “oop North” recorded a top board speed of 25.44 knots on his gps, quite an achievement for a raceboard on a comparatively small pond!
Jon took first place in Race One, followed by James Moon and Robert Kent, with Jon Davis in fourth. These four finished in the same order in every race apart from Race Three which was won by James.
After Race One there was a considerable amount of re-rigging, down came the Demons and up went the Lightnings, although a few brave souls continued with their XR: Race sails.
Pathfinder for Race Three was Chris Gibson who disgraced himself by falling in just as the gun went, causing Paul Robinson, who was perfectly lined up for a blistering start to cross too soon. In an ideal world it should have been a re-start, but we were not equipped for such niceties.
The wind settled down just a little for Race Four, not quite so gusty but the punishing lulls still made their unexpected appearance.
Having slipped in Race Three, Jon White made sure of his three bullets in this last race to take the event with three wins, followed by James, Rob and Jon Davis - the same order overall as in Race One.
Our first Lady was Annette in 7th place overall, not quite as happy today as she usually revels in strong wind.
Alysia Gibson did very well, completing all four races on her 3.5 and Emily & Rebecca Kent also made a brave effort in the quite extraordinary winds.
