There was a forecast of 14 mph for Queen Mary a couple of days before the event, but as we arrived at the reservoir it was like a sheet of glass. However the wind did start to kick in, although “kick” is maybe not the exact term as for the first two races it was all over the place with catspaws and shifts of short duration. After lunch it was more like the forecast wind and it was really enjoyable. The cruelty of the shifts can be deduced by looking at the discards of the top seven sailors, a couple of moments of confusion and you were history, one duff race and that was your discard taken care of, two duff races and you were down the pan for the day. Still, the sun shone beautifully and we all got to top up our suntans. Race One had then usual suspects in the top few slots, Rob Kent - 1st, Alan Jackson on his new (Old) Demon - 2nd, Annette Kent on her new 8.5 Tushy XR:Race - 3rd and Chris Gibson - 4th. Race Two proved a total upset for the books, Annette streaked into the lead followed by Bill Keeling as the left side of the course suddenly paid off in spades. Bill was eventually overhauled by Adrian Brearley and Paul Leone, but Annette was first over the line. Other notable sailors finished rather further back (see results below!). As mentioned above, after lunch the wind was much more predictable, but this time it was Annette’s turn to receive her comeuppance, Rob took first place, Chris Gibson 2nd and Paul Leone 3rd. In the last race Rod Davis and Bill Keeling followed Rob and Annette around the windward mark but they were gradually overhauled and finished 8th and 5th respectively and Alan Jackson managed to split Mr and Mrs Kent. At the younger end of the main fleet Andrew Robinson finished in 13th overall, just two points behind Dad and Jonny Dudfield led the Technos home, just one point ahead of Henry Bloodworth. Our lone Formula sailor, Steve Sugden, who had been enticed by the promising forecast, nevertheless persisted and got planing several times and later claimed that he had enjoyed himself. Congrats go to Annette Kent, taking second place overall when using an 8.5(!) Tushingham XR Race ahead of all those guys on 9.5’s! It was also great to welcome back an old LWA campaigner, Giles Wooltorton, back to windsurfing after many years’ absence. In the Juniors, Emily and Rebecca Kent continued to punch in 1st and 2nd places as the girls coped bravely with the vagaries of the wind.
