It is always a great pleasure looking forward to the visit to King George Reservoir as the club is exceptionally hospitable and welcoming. This year was no exception despite the dire warnings of killer shrimps (Dikerogammarus villosus) recently found at Grafham, requiring kit to be washed as a precaution to prevent the spread of this unwelcomed European visitor. The forecast was exceptional for this time of year- sunshine, summer temperatures and wind ! There was even a full reservoir unlike last year where we seemed to be sailing in the shallows most of the time.
Unfortunately the plans for lashings of sun screen had to be put on hold as the sun hid behind low overcast sky and the wind decided to drop in strength as soon as sails were rigged and we were ready to race. A very relaxed approach to getting ready to race seemed to be the order of the day as a number of sailors arrived close to normal briefing time and given the somewhat low turnout it was felt we couldn’t exclude any one from the start line. Poor Nick Fountain’s sail had a coming together with a very vicious fence needing a fair amount of tlc and rolls of repair film but he made it on the water in time
As usual the myriad of static buoys at King George made for interesting course setting and despite flags on the marks and a excellent briefing and a lead boat, race 1 still proved a challenging navigation exercise for the speedy Alan Jackson, requiring advice from second place Rob Kent to avoid going wrong. Given the lead that Alan had it was surprising that he could hear Rob as he seemed to get all the wind shifts spot on ! Great third place from Russ Canning holding off Chris Gibson in 4th.
The second race started with a unusual bit of argy bargy on the line between Rob and Chris which was exacerbated by a very starboard biased start line. A good start wasn’t the precursor for a great finishing place as the beat was a minefield of potential wrong decisions but Rob got most of them right to finish ahead of Chris followed by Alan and Russ having a great morning’s racing.
After a brief break for lunch, with the start line adjusted and the wind swinging it looked like a port start but the wind swung back at the last moment leaving Andrew, and Rob to make fast tacks to get away cleanly. Rob had his second win of the day with Russ getting his best result in second and followed by Chris and Alan. The final race of the day saw a remarkable ending with a tie for first place between Chris and Alan with Rob in third clinching a closely fought overall victory.
Our junior fleet had a slightly shorter course but the racing was no less fierce with Rebecca and Alysia sharing 2 wins each with the overall result going down to the last race for Alysia to take the result.
