LWA 2010 Summer Series:
Event 4 - Bewl Valley Sat 19 June

The weather forecast was rather ominous, a northerly of 30 knots plus on the east coast was mentioned, which did not bode well for a gentle day’s sailing at Bewl! However we started the day with a record turnout of 28 Raceboards and Alohas in the Main Fleet and 7 in the Juniors, it was sunny and there was some wind…..

There were a few odd gusts in Race One which caught people out, but the usual suspects still found themselves at the front of the fleet. Rob Kent filled his customary number one slot followed by James Moon and Chris Gibson. The finishing order was upset in Race Two by the appearance of an old friend from the past who used to feature strongly in the old South-East Region, namely Andy Gibson, who took second place behind Rob and pushed Chris and James into 3^rd and 4^th.  The increasingly gusty conditions caused a number of sailors to call it a day and the DNFs started to accumulate.

At the start of Race Three there were some ominous looking black clouds on the horizon and sure enough before long they made their presence felt with the nearest thing to a storm of ice crystals we have ever experienced at an  LWA event, it was very cold and very windy! Nevertheless the top four continued on their way unruffled, which is more than could be said for the Committee Boat which was dragging its two anchors and nearly disappeared completely for a period. This time around James was in second place behin Rob, with Chris and Andy following along behind.

Things calmed down somewhat in time for the final race, Alan Jackson was able to take advantage of his Demon and sneak fourth place from Andy Gibson behind Rob, James and Chris.

The younger sailors in the main fleet enjoyed themselves, Andrew Robinson beat his dad overall, finishing 13^th to dad’s 17^th, Jon Davis beat his dad, (10^th/14^th) James Moon finished second overall, Conor Wells had a good result in Race One on his RS:X and did well to finish in 15th place overall.

Techno sailors Matthew Barton, Jonny Dudfield and Aidan Liddy put on a great show in the gusty winds and sailed very creditably.

Great praise must also go to the Juniors who went out bravely at the start of the event, Jenna Gibson, Zara Petts and Emily Kent completing all four races and Jessica Dudfield completing three. It’s a real treat to see fathers and daughters (and in the Kent’s case mother too!) all out on the water and racing at the same time. Today we had two different Gibson families, the Kent girls and Eric Petts’ daughter Zara! What we need now is a few more sons in the Junior Fleet!
