Plenty of wind, not much sunshine and even less water greeted us at King George! It’s the first time we have launched there off a beach! However the shallows did not cause much of a problem and surprisingly the wind was quite clean, despite the impression of sailing at the bottom of a football stadium. The bacon butties were as welcoming as ever, as indeed were the club members. Our Race Officer set a course to keep us as clear as possible from the wind curling over the north end of the reservoir and this worked quite well. During the day there were some gusts of 14 knots or so, and if you happened to be in the wind line you zoomed past those unlucky rivals who had missed out. This being the final event in the 2009 Summer Series, it was going to be something of a needle match, however a spanner was thrown into the sewing box by the return of James Moon, who took on the sharp end of the fleet with a brilliant day’s sailing. It was great to see another “younger” person for a change amongst the shoals of vets and masters. Rob Kent nailed Race One, despite determined attempts by Chris Gibson, Alan Jackson and James Moon, who finished in that order. Further down the fleet Andrew Robinson sailing an 8.5 sail on a raceboard went very well until the last lap and even so managed to beat a number of the oldsters, including his dad! James Moon simply flew round the course in Race Two, finishing ahead of Chris Gibson and Russ Canning, who had is best result of the day. Rob Kent finished an uncharacteristic 5th. The Kent girls, Emily & Rebecca, continued to persevere on their small sails and we look forward to their continued success in the future. Well done, girls! Despite fears that the wind would drop in the afternoon, our luck held and Rob Kent, having recovered from his nasty fright in Race Two, made no more errors and led the fleet home in Race Three ahead of James and Chris. In the last race Alan Jackson, who seems to have rediscovered his old form, was able to push James into 4th behind the first two men home, Rob and Chris. James and Chris ended up on the same points and despite Chris’s being presented with 2nd prize at the event, James was in fact the second place man! Sorry guys for this glitch!
