What a day this turned out to be! Sunshine most of the time and a southerly wind of over 15 knots, frequently holding at well over 20 and gusting over 30! One of our best turnouts for a long time saw 32 sailors signing on, although we have to admit that a couple of them decided that the mega winds were going to be too much and they decided to stay on the bank. 10 Juniors signed on and only one of them did not complete a race.
The local Queen Mary shortboard sailors were mightily impressed when they found out that the guys at the front of the fleet were racing with 9.4’s in Force 5 - 6 and plenty of others were on 8.5s.
The front of the fleet was once again dominated by Rob Kent and Chris Gibson, who managed to complete 5 laps in Race One and 4 in Race Two, lapping some other competitors twice! They were travelling at an amazing speed on their 9.4 Tushy Lightnings. The windy weather gave the RS:Xs in the hands of Ryan Tilbury and Jamie Ingram the chance to shine, and shine they certainly did, Jamie taking a 2nd and a 3rd place and Ryan two 4ths and a 5th. Paul Leone showed that he can sail in windy weather as well as light by taking a 2nd and 3rd place in the afternoon races and Annette Kent continued her winning ways with three top five placings. The Juniors performed remarkably well, their Techno 293s revelling in the conditions, In the 7.8s Tom Squires from Oxford SC charted 3 bullets, finishing 4 points ahead of Sam Conroy. Alex Mitchell and Charlie Wilson were only one point behind Sam. Joanna Evans showed great determination to complete three races in very demanding conditions. Connor Wells and Andrew Robinson battled it out in the 6.8 class, both of them completing four races and Connor taking the honours. In the 4.5s Dani Conroy completed three races and Henry Bloodworth one. It was incredible to see these tiny youngsters undaunted by the wind and the white horses. Quite clearly the Team 15 initiative is bringing on some very talented young windsurfers and the older sailors were full of admiration for the courage and perseverance of all the Juniors out on the water, who sailed off the same line and sailed the same course as everyone else..
