Last of the Summer Series - Bewl Valley Sat 4 Oct

Considering the terrible weather forecast - winds of over 35 mph and torrential rain - we did well to achieve a turnout of 17 sailors, especially a bunch of the youngsters were away training.

Race One however was run in lightish winds, with everyone opting for their biggest kit. Rod Kent, using a Phantom and a prototype Tushy 9.5, showed his usual class, beating Chris Gibson and Adie Rippington to the line. Doug Starr, showing how well he was getting used to his new Phantom, filled 4th place.

Race Two also started in lightish winds, but on lap two an e--normous squall blew through, which almost destroyed half the fleet. Six or seven sailors made it to the end, but fortunately most of those who were downed had completed at least on lap, so they all received a finishing place.

Rob and Chris filled slots one and two, with Annette Kent revelling in the windy weather in 3rd.

After lunch the question for many of us was whether to change down. However we were lulled into a false sense of security and whilst most of the Demon sailors had changed to Lightnings, the wind did build considerably and caused problems for many sailors.  Rob and Chris once again led the field home, with Adie 3rd ahead of Alan Jackson having his best race of the day in 4th. Young Rupert Munro-Faire obviously enjoyed the windier weather and finished in 6th place, a feat which he repeated in the last race of the day.

Several sailors decided that enough was enough, and the promised vile weather was clearly establishing itself for the rest of the day, so they settled for a discard and started to de-rig before getting soaked as well as frozen. Once again, Rob and Chris did the business at the head of the fleet, with Annette 3rd and Doug 4th

So overall it was another win for the unstoppable Rob Kent, with four bullets, Chris Gibson second with four 2nds, then a gap to Annette and Doug, both on 12 points. Rupert Munro-Faire’s efforts after lunch brought him right up the field to take 8th place overall, a fantastic effort for a Techno 7.8. Andrew Robinson also did well to finish in 13th place on his Techno 6.8. However, the Techno results below have been split out from the main fleet as is our custom.

It looks as though Rob might have just pulled off the series prize…. But although you can probably work out the positions for yourselves based on the last set of cumulative results, our esteemed Chairman, Paul Robinson, has decreed that the Final Results will be published at the first Icebreaker event on Sat 1 Nov at Queen Mary when the Summer Series prizes will be presented together with the Summer Series T shirts.

Let’s get those Icebreaker teams together, 5 persons for the adult teams and 3 for the youngsters, no sail size limits. Oxford will be once again determined to hold on to the trophy, but there will be a determined challenge for more than one quarter. Here’s to a great 2008 Icebreaker.
