Bough Beech lived up to its reputation with a typical wild and windy event such as we have come to expect. After the usual friendly welcome from Stewart, our regular Bough Beech Race Officer there were a number of troubled faces as the wind began to live up to the forecast, which was for wind in the late teens with gusts well into the 20 knot bracket.
The promise of wind brought out the Formula boys in the shape of Xav Ferlet, Dan Simpson and Paul Kearns, and even Alex Trickle, who had signed on as Unlimited, took advantage of the class’s flexible rules to sail a Formula board. The RSX’s were looking forward to a day when they could make an impression on the front end of the fleet and Paul Fey was out to show that there was still plenty of life in the IMCO.
Xanv and Dan had things all their own way for the whole of the event, Xav dropping down to 2nd only for Race 2, which Dan pinched from him.
Apart from Race One, Rob Kent made a clean sweep of the rest of the field on his Tushy 9.5, Bernie Fyans managing to get ahead of him only in the first race.
Peter Fey on his IMCO 7.4 sailed very well to take fourth place overall, just one point ahead of Annette Kent who used a light wind sail all day!
Alex Trickle sailed his Formula board into 6th place overall, taking the 1st Unlimited prize 5 points clear of Bernie Fyans. Ashley Barratt in was the first RS:X home in 9th overall, a few points behind Jon Davis, making his first appearance on a raceboard for almost two years due to some nasty knee problems.
Sam Conroy and Alex Mitchell finished well up the fleet in 13th and 16th places respectively, elbowing aside some more venerable sailors whose were finding the conditions rather too testing. Stuart Hards led home the 6.8 Techno fleet in a well deserved 22nd place overall.
All in all a very enjoyable but a very hard day’s sailing - the highest gust registered by the Committee boat was 31 knots. A great tribute is due to the determination of all our sailors, especially the youngsters who put up a fine show.
We must apologize for the delay in producing the results, this was a due to a combination of several factors - the large number of laps sailed in Race One, (Xav and Dan managed seven) - sudden computer death which meant we had to use Excel on the Club’s computer instead of our own system - and several duff, missing or duplicated sail numbers which would have caused problems in their own right! Having circulated provisional results and taken account of all the emailed comments we are now putting up the FINAL results. Our thanks to all those who responded.
