LWA Icebreaker 2007 Event 3

     At last - an Icebreaker with real ice like it used to be in the olden days! The car thermometer was well below zero on the drive to Queen Mary so it promised to be a chilly day. Brian in the Queen Mary shop did a roaring trade in neoprene gloves. Race One was rather cold, several people agreed that prudence was the better part of valour and decided to give up.
     We were sailing on the East side of the reservoir because of the RYA keelboat match racing so the bund was affecting the wind quality, despite the fact that it now has very little vegetation growing on it. The Pathfinder board for Race One discovered this to his cost as the main fleet blasted off across the water on a brisk 10 knots or so of wind. Despite being occasionally troubled by Farmoor Flyer Nick Kidd, Rob Kent (Silicon Sisters) soon found his winning ways and carded the first of his four bullets of the day. Nick filled 2nd place and Annette Kent (also a Silicon Sister) was 3rd. It looked as though the Silicon Sisters were going to give the Farmoor Flyers a run for their money.  Race 2 found Andy Lacy (Farmoor Flyers) crossing the line in 3rd place behind the same winners as Race 1, easing Annette into 4th.
     After lunch the temperature had improved somewhat and quite a few sailors weren’t using gloves at all! In Race 3 Rob continued at the front, Andy Lacy slotted in another 2nd place and Dave Gilchrist (LWA Select) was 3rd. In the last race three of the LWA team engineered a multiple pileup at the windward mark which allowed a large chunk of the fleet to get past, but in the grand scheme of things it probably didn’t affect the final result.
     Although the Silicon Sisters in the shape of Rob and Annette filled two of the first four places, the Farmoor Flyers managed to pull off another victory, thus taking the Icebreaker Trophy back to Oxford for yet another year.
     Alex Trickle sailing a 9.4 on an IMCO for the Queen Mary went very well to take 10th place overall and the first Junior was Alex Mitchell in 21st, also sailing for Queen Mary.
