The forecast promised a windy day but when we arrived there was only a handful of knots, but as the sailors trickled in, so did the wind, although the direction was more or less over the clubhouse, not ideal!
However there was an excellent turnout, 27 adults and 14 youngsters. The wind was supposed to be around 14 knots with gusts up to 25, and that was more or less what we got, except no one mentioned those rather frequent moments when there was no wind at all. These usually happened as you was in the straps and hanging out!
We were all waiting to see whether the Farmoor Flyers could strike back after their narrow defeat last weekend. Dan Simpson and Xav Ferlet appeared armed with their Formula boards, Dan sailing for his home team, the Flyers but Xav, being a wandering gypsy type, had to settle for the Farmoor Seagulls team.
In Race One there was a prang between an upwind Xav and a downwind Graham Drake which resulted in a retirement by Xav. This left the field clear for Dan to take first place by a large margin from Rob Kent (Silicon Sisters)and Adrian Rippington (Farmoor Flyers). Also sailing were some hot youngsters, one of whom - LWA Young Windsurfer of the year Alex Trickle sailing for the Queen Mary Juniors team - scored his best result of 7th overall in this race.
Race Two found Xav and Dan taking the first two places, with Chris Gibson (Silicon Sisters) taking 3rd place ahead of the Flyers’ Andy Lacy.
During lunchtime the wind died away but by the start of Race Three, it was back again, but slighty less fluky than before. Dan edged Xav into 2nd place and Rob Kent and Chris Gibson filled 3rd and 4th. Alex Trickle carded another single figure placing with a 9th.
Arms were aching as we started the final race in which the Dan/Xav duel continued, this time Xav took first slot, and Rob and Chris finished again in the same order.
On the day Farmoor won by a clear 29 points over their Silicon Sister rivals and in the Juniors The Queen Mary team beat the Oxford Zoomers by 39 points. Xav and Dan were separated only by Xav’s last race victory, the pair of them having enjoyed a great day’s sailing, lapping the whole field in almost every race. Rob Kent filled the first Raceboard slot. Alex Trickle was first youngster in 10th overall, a very creditable performance.
